Blossoms on my smoke tree

Posted by
Marion (Nanaimo, BC, Canada) on 5 August 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

A close up of the blossoms on my smoke tree. Here is a description of what a smoke tree is.

A very unique, small tree that you will surely fall in love with… as an accent in your home landscape, or as a specimen flowering tree.

The dark round leaves give the tree a rugged and casual appearance in summer, and are a marvelous scarlet color display in the autumn.

Smoke Tree gets its name from the way it looks while in bloom. Like an airy cloud of smoke floating atop the pretty leaves.

This most unusual blooming effect comes from the fluffy heads that hold clusters of very tiny flowers.

I've never heard that name before, but you give a good description. Good mixture of reds in there, well done.

@Mandy Provan: I saw one and just had to have a couple of them myself. They are a lovely color and so whimsical and delicate. I will have to plant another one at my new place when I get there.

Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United States

I'm another who's never heard of a smoke tree - it sounds wonderful.
If it grows in your climate, I'm sure it will not down here where it's still 85 at 7:45 pm - 30C.

5 Aug 2008 11:50pm

@Judy: Judy, it is planted in my side garden which takes the hot sun all day and right now it's 30C on the porch. I'm not sure what it's limitations are, but one thing I am sure of it wouldn't do well in really cold climates. They are closely related to the sumacs (Rhus). They are large shrubs or small trees, native to the warm temperate Northern Hemisphere. So maybe they would.

Barbara from Florida, United States

Beautifully captured and composed image. I really like the colors and tones.
In a frame with a real white mat like you have here would be wonderful.
I enjoyed your commentary on this smoke tree. First I have heard of it.
