In the spotlightPosted by Marion (Nanaimo, BC, Canada) on 26 May 2008 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio. A lovely weed on the bank behind our home. It is dotted with these purple lovlies along with bright orange wild poppies. A very colorful bank. I looked up the name of this wildflower ... It is called a Purple Loosestrife. The name "Loosestrife" comes from the ancient practice of draping these plants over the necks of yoked oxen to "loosen the strife" between the animals.

Earnest from Oklahoma, United StatesLooks oddly familiar -- perhaps from a wildflower pack I planted some time ago... Nice photo. 26 May 2008 5:06am @Earnest: It looks very much like the picture Ron posted a couple of days ago, only his is more dappled by the sun and I think a nicer capture. Almost didn't post it, but......I still like yours better. Judy from Brooksville-Florida,, United StatesI'm smiling as I write, Marion. I named a small flowering 'weed' as such and was chastised into renaming it a 'wildflower' ... so I guess the same is true here. God doesn't make junk, right? :) 26 May 2008 1:00pm @Judy: No He sure doesn't. OK, from now on I will call them a wildflower. Actually I think they are called something strife. I wonder what it is. I did look up wildflowers before I posted this and found a site which identified this as loosestrife. That site was obviously wrong. Well now you have me scratching my head and wondering what this really is....:D Marion from Nanaimo, BC, Canadaumm, I just looked it up on the net and you are right this doesn't look like any of the pictures I see there.
