A lovely weed on the bank behind our home. It is dotted with these purple lovlies along with bright orange wild poppies. A very colorful bank. I looked up the name of this wildflower ... It is called a Purple Loosestrife. The name "Loosestrife" comes from the ancient practice of draping these plants over the necks of yoked oxen to "loosen the strife" between the animals.
I am on holidays from August 17th until August 26th ....whee!! Although I will be home for the first few days, on the 21st we are heading to the States mainly to go to Tacoma Washington to attend the Gaither Gospel Homecoming Tour on Friday the 22nd. We are in for a real treat. We will also be tourists for a while and hopefully will come back with lots of good pictures. Anyhow, all of that to say I probably won't be visiting your wonderful sites for at least the 21st - 26th, but I promise I will catch up. I will prepost.
Looks oddly familiar -- perhaps from a wildflower pack I planted some time ago... Nice photo.

@Earnest: It looks very much like the picture Ron posted a couple of days ago, only his is more dappled by the sun and I think a nicer capture.

@Anthony Lambert: You are right Anthony, in flowers purple and blue are my favorites, but then I love all of the flowers no matter what color they are. Picked out two new clematis yesterday to plant at our new house. Purple and blue. You have found me out.
Lovely lighting, good DOF

@Ron: I snapped a few close up (my favorite) pictures of the wildflowers and when I uploaded them to my computer realized that it looked very much like your posting of a few days ago. Almost didn't post it, but......I still like yours better.
I'm smiling as I write, Marion. I named a small flowering 'weed' as such and was chastised into renaming it a 'wildflower' ... so I guess the same is true here. God doesn't make junk, right? :)

@Judy: No He sure doesn't. OK, from now on I will call them a wildflower. Actually I think they are called something strife. Now my curiosity is aroused I will have to look it up. I found it, it is called Purple Loosestrife. The name "Loosestrife" comes from the ancient practice of draping these plants over the necks of yoked oxen to "loosen the strife" between the animals.

A lovely photo. i like how the flowers are in light surrounded by darker areas. However, I don't think it is Purple Loosestrife, as Loosetrife flowers have 6 petals each.

@Anita: umm, I just looked it up on the net and you are right this doesn't look like any of the pictures I see there. I wonder what it is. I did look up wildflowers before I posted this and found a site which identified this as loosestrife. That site was obviously wrong. Well now you have me scratching my head and wondering what this really is....:D

Could it be Fireweed?
30 May 2008 7:06am
@Anita: no, fireweed has beautiful long stamens in the center much like the azeleas have and their petals are longer and less round. Next time I am on at local garden shop I shall ask. Thanks for your input.
